How Lockdown Period Has Motivated Us To Get Healthy And Be A Better Version Of Ourselves.

Before the lockdown began, our daily routines looked something like this: snoozing the alarm on repeat mode, having a rushed breakfast or skipping it completely to reach work on time, attending back-to-back meetings, grabbing a quick lunch either at the desk or in cafeteria and coming home exhausted, or being stuck in traffic and crowded trains.

The national lockdown, implemented to curb the spread of the novel Coronavirus, has reversed this situation completely. It’s natural that most of us panicked initially, worrying how we’d be able to work from home or get groceries and manage with other essentials. But the extended period of lockdown has also encouraged us to self-introspect and adopt better lifestyle changes especially eating habits, towards a more mindful, healthier and balanced living. Here’s what the lockdown offered:

Following a balanced, mindful diet at home

Remember those days when we would mindlessly order in or survive on ready-to-eat meals? They’re well behind us. The lockdown has helped us become more aware of our food choices. Consuming immunity boosting foods, such as ginger, Turmeric, seeds and nuts, or haldi doodh, has also become priority since our immune cells are the first line of defense against infections and fighting diseases. And these cells require protein to build and repair body tissues, and function at an optimal level. As a result, we’ve rediscovered the joy of eating home-cooked meals that are rich in protein, whether it’s cracking up an egg to make omelette for breakfast, making chicken tikka from scratch or finding comfort in rajma-chawal or moong dal halwa.

More time to introspect and plan meals

Finding ‘me-time’ in the middle of busy, hectic routines was a huge challenge earlier and was only a dream, until we went into a 60-day lockdown period, due to Covid-19. But staying at home has afforded all of us time to self-reflect. We’re becoming more aware of our strengths, weaknesses and people we value the most. There’s more mindfulness now, even when doing daily activities, whether it’s cooking, cleaning or simply, enjoying a sunset from the terrace.

This mindfulness extends to making grocery lists, planning meals, trying new dishes as well. While earlier, we’d pick-as-we-go in supermarkets, now, it’s more about choosing foods that can stay fresh for long periods to ensure balanced and healthy living along and most importantly, judicious consumption.

Interestingly, many protein-packed items end up topping this list, be it beans, lentils, nuts, eggs or milk all packed with protein.

Honing personal skills

With offices adapting to work from home (WFH) model during the lockdown, we have extra time in hands to return to old hobbies, learn new skills, or trying new things that we always have desired. Signing up for online classes to learn cooking, improving writing skills, rediscovering the joy of making origami dinosaurs or putting on an apron and baking protein rich oatmeal cookies. The lockdown has motivated us all to seek solace by doing things that our hearts desire.

Creating a fitness routine

Gyms maybe shut in this time, but fitness has been on everyone’s minds now more than ever before. As many experts, believe that yoga will help cope with this crisis. Setting up a daily routine of exercising at home using chairs, tables, walls and any other available infrastructure and other ancient techniques can indeed help build immunity against Covid-19. Other means of staying fit could also be skipping ropes or hula hoop to get the body moving.

Surely, we still have a long way to go before the pandemic ends and we resume our life’s back to the new normal. Even after the lockdown is lifted, wearing masks, sanitizing hands frequently and maintaining social distance will all be an integral part our lives. However, the immunity boosting, and healthy habits cultivated during the lockdown will only help us fight Covid-19 more fiercely and emerge victorious.

4 Nutrition Myths That Need To Die: This World Nutrition Day

With limited diet related information, lack of awareness surrounded around food consumption habits, it seems like our idea of proper nutrition are always wavering— especially when it comes to choosing the right source and amount of nutrients our body needs. This World Nutrition Day let’s tackle some of the most pervasive nutrition related misconceptions:

Myth 1: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day

While it was once thought that eating breakfast was one of the most important meals towards setting yourself up for a healthy day, research shows that this might not be the case for many. For instance, research shows that skipping your first meal of the day-breakfast, may result in reduced calorie intake. Additionally, Skipping breakfast is an integral part of intermittent fasting methods. As the eating window in intermittent fasting usually ranges from lunch until dinner, which means that one skips breakfast every day. Intermittent fasting has shown effective results in reducing calorie intake, increasing weight loss and improving metabolic health. Nonetheless, it’s important to mention that eating or skipping breakfast does not suit everyone. The effects of each vary by individual bodies.

Truth: There is evidence that shows eating a well-balanced, well-proportioned and timely meal that fits your body’s needs may benefit your health by reducing inflammation and body weight.

Myth 2:  All high-fat foods are unhealthy

Many people still fear that high fat foods lead to weight gain and do no good to our body, thereby following strict low-fat diets in the hopes that cutting their fat intake will benefit their overall health and well-being. Contrary to popular perception, fat is critical for several body functions, including regulation of hormones, body temperature, immune function, insulin signaling, and nutrient absorption. However, one must ensure to consume healthy fats such as: avocados, quinoa, beans etc. As these fats are needed to perform several body functions and are good source of balanced diet.

The problem lies in eating saturated fat that is responsible for increasing blood cholesterol levels and low-density lipoprotein levels. According to nutritionists, limit your cholesterol intake to less than 300 mg daily, and less than 200 mg daily if you have a history of heart attacks, or diabetes, or are over 55 (women) or 45 (men). Although, one should be extremely cautious about the extremes in either direction, whether it is consuming a very low fat or consuming a very high fat diet, either of these would harm our health when continued for long-term.

Truth: There are a variety of healthy fat foods that are extremely nutritious and should be present in our diets such as: Avocados, Nuts, Seeds, Fish, lean Chicken, Paneer etc.

Myth 3: Vegetarian foods don’t have complete protein

The biggest myth surrounding vegetarian diet is that it lacks complete source of protein, making vegetarians protein deficient. However, there’s no reason to believe it!  If you eat a well-balanced diet, there is a high probability that you will meet your daily requirements, irrespective of whether you follow a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian diet. What is important for vegetarians or plant-based diets is that one must ensure to consume a variety of protein rich sources that are incomplete protein by itself, but when eaten with other sources of protein makes it a complete protein. It’s impossible not to get enough protein if you’re eating a balanced diet. To up your protein intake, load up on a variety of protein rich options like beans, lentils, paneer, soy milk, tofu, milk, nuts and seeds to your everyday diets. Truth: Consuming a variety of incomplete protein foods during the meal, certainly ensures that vegetarians have met their daily protein needs.

Myth 4:  Protein only comes from milk, meat and egg

Nearly every food on this planet contains protein, although the composition will vary. Some of the vegetarian option that are rich sources of protein are: milk, paneer, tofu, soy, legumes, grains, lentils, chickpeas, beans, nuts and seeds etc. Non-vegetarian sources of protein come from: eggs, meat, chicken, fish etc. However, Protein comes in two forms ‘Complete and Incomplete’. Complete protein like milk, eggs and soy are among other food sources that contain all the 9 essential amino acids required by the body to remain healthy and fully functional. While the incomplete protein such as legumes, vegetables etc. lack few essential amino acids. But consuming a variety of incomplete sources of protein is as good as consuming complete protein.

Truth: Protein can be consumed from a variety of sources – plant and animal

It has been over a month or so, since Coronavirus has changed the way we live, work, and eat. As social distancing and staying indoors has become a new normal, weekend brunches and evening drinks have given way to home cooking and whipping up easy, delicious recipes.

Having to cook every single meal comes with the challenge of finding creative recipes and new dishes that call for same pantry staples, which have been stocked up as essentials. Moreover, we are constantly seeking to innovate and replicate our love for different cuisines by rationing resources and using the available ingredients wisely.

let’s look at some of the meals that people are cooking during this quarantine period to get some inspiration and ideas. We are already hungry, aren’t you?

Lemon Rice

For days you want to eat something nutritious and delicious, there is nothing better than this lemon rice! The tangy flavor of lemon coupled with spices gives this meal a refreshing twist.

What alternative healthy ingredients do you put into the meal to switch it up? You can use brown rice instead of white rice to make this dish healthier.

What is the most important pantry staple you were sure to stock up on during this time? Rice, chicken, bananas, Oatmeal, Noodles and Pasta, potato, garlic, and eggs off-course!

Simply dumping them in the refrigerator or leaving them outside in humid conditions tend to spoil the grocery leading to waste of resources.

Instead, proper storage practices can extend their shelf-life, especially for few perishable and non-perishable foods. So, you can plan healthier meals in advance, maintain your overall well-being as well as cut down your food costs, minimize waste in your kitchen and meet your daily protein requirements efficiently.

Here are five foods that have a long shelf life and will help you last the lockdown.

Fish: Shelf life: 3-6 Days

A great source of high-quality protein, seafood is an essential part of meals if you are a non-vegetarian. It can be eaten with noodles, rice, pasta or as a standalone dish. Fish is a great source of nutrients and a better alternative for red meats as it has less fats and fewer calories. Storing fish in the coldest part of your refrigerator helps preserve it for longer. Additionally, if you have cooked fish that’s left over from previous meal, it’s a good practice to store it in a tightly closed container to retain its freshness, taste and moisture.

Milk Alternatives: Shelf life 3-4 Days once opened

Whether it’s soy milk, almond milk, or coconut milk, there are a variety of healthy dairy alternatives that are great substitutes for fresh milk, have higher shelf life and are equally nutritious. Placing them at the back of the refrigerator shelf rather than by the door, helps avoid the impact of temperatures fluctuating due to frequent opening of the door.

Vegetables and fruits: Potatoes and Onions: Shelf life: 3 to 5 weeks

Baby Potatoes, large potatoes or onions can last for up to three to five weeks. Sweet potatoes have about the same shelf life. However, they should not be stored next to onion. While they might pair well in cooking, when raw, each releases gases and moisture that might cause the other to spoil faster. Additionally, potatoes and onions can largely be cooked by themselves and can be included in every Indian recipe, so stocking them smartly makes them perfect for a long lockdown.

Nuts and seeds: Shelf life 5-7 weeks

Walnuts, cashews, peanuts, almonds, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds, are great sources of protein. They can also last for months if stored smartly. Nuts and seeds are not only good for snacking but can also be thrown into oats, morning cereals etc. It’s good to keep most nuts, especially walnuts and cashews, in the refrigerator because they can turn bad in warm conditions. Since nuts often soak in the odours around them, storing them in air-tight containers help them stay fresh. Seeds, meanwhile, can be stored in a cool dark place in air-tight glass or ceramic containers as they can rot in plastic.

Beans, grains, and lentils: Shelf life 12 to 18 months

Soya beans, black beans, rice, quinoa kidney beans, lentil and other varieties of grains are a great source of protein that are non-perishable and are essential staple foods in India. They are must-haves in the pantry considering their long shelf-life. It’s best to store them away from sunlight. Use air-tight containers and keep them in a cool, dry place.

Every year, 7th April is celebrated as ‘World Health Day’, a day reserved by the World Health Organization with an aim to focus on the issues of global healthcare, by sharing messages that require urgent attention in keeping the world healthy. As rightly said ‘You are, what you eat’, and What you eat each day directly affects your health now and in the future. Good nutrition plays a key role in helping you lead a healthy lifestyle. Since the food we eat helps maintain your weight and alleviate the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, kidney failure, or heart disease, and thereby promoting better health and overall well-being.

On this world Health Day do your bit and support the medical staff by staying indoors, implementing social distancing, and eating healthy. It is true that idlis are one of the most popular and favorite breakfast items for most Indians, but this south-Indian specialty is an abundant source of nutrients like folic acid, niacin, thiamine, biotin, and Vitamin K. And to make idlis only healthier and highly protein-rich with some of the readily available ingredients in your kitchen, here’s a quick must-try list:

Ragi Idli: Ragi idli is a perfect ingredient for weight loss. Nutrition is a critical factor of a good immune system– like most things, immunity functions better when it’s well-nourished. For instance, protein malnutrition is associated with delayed healing and slower recovery. In other words, if the body does not have enough of the building blocks, there is likely to be significant impairment of immunity.
