World Food Day 2020: India’s Top Experts Believe Protein Deficiency Is Need Of The Hour

Every year, the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations commemorates October 16, as World Food Day. This year’s theme of #ZeroHunger calls on individuals and organizations to prioritize the need to combat food insecurity and help the most vulnerable people meet their nutritional needs. However, World Food Day 2020 takes on a new meaning – to approach food security with not just the quantity of foods, but the quality, so as to strengthen food systems to sustain volatility and pull through the health crisis.

Today, the ability of countries to maintain the momentum on their respective nutrition agendas are in the spotlight. While in India, the double burden of malnutrition and obesity, anemia, and diabetes has been debated and discussed, experts identify the need to make protein sufficiency a part of the discourse. This is because of the lack of protein knowledge among mothers in several parts of the country, which might be contributing to protein deficiencies among children (Protein Paradox, 2020). This cause for concern has also been identified by UNICEF in a 2019 study that revealed consumption of protein-based calories is negligible for Indian children and its intake share remains unchanged in the last two decades. 

So, here’s what India’s leading health experts believe can be the way forward for the country’s fight against protein deficiency and malnourishment:

Saleema Razvi, Research Economist at Copenhagen Consensus Centre: “There [is] clear evidence [that] points to the continual persistence of protein hunger or deficiency among large sections of the population. The approach to tackling malnutrition should therefore include focusing on the lack of protein rather than just the current emphasis on micronutrient malnutrition. It is important that India encourages and fosters pertinent levels of production and consumption of high-quality protein rich foods so as to supplement the country’s attempts to improve diet quality and fight stubbornly high levels of undernutrition.”

Madhuri Ruia, Nutrition & Fitness Expert and an alumnus of the American Academy Of Nutrition: “The need of the hour is heightened awareness and education about the country’s protein consumption and a strong ecosystem to enable tangible behaviour change. Providing Education and influencing behavioural changes need to be made across the spectrum, and as nutritionists, it is our prerogative to nudge the society in the right direction with constant education”

Nmami Agarwal Nutritionist and wellness expert, CEO & Founder, Nmami Life: “The biggest hurdle is lack of awareness about the importance of dietary rich foods. And the major cause of concern is that most people don’t think protein is essential component of diet, and unlike calcium or iron deficiency, protein deficiency is still not taken very seriously. Health care practitioners especially dieticians and nutritionists can raise awareness on an individual basis or conduct workshops or seminars to bridge the protein deficiency gap.”

Dr. Kavitha Reddy, Ph.D., Nutrition Expert and Director – Sreya Nutrition: “Only few take in to account the role that a strong immunity plays during such times. Protein is a determinant of an individual’s nutrition and immune response, so in times like these, eating protein-rich food has become the utmost priority, boosting immune system and giving people the best chance to fight deadly viruses like Covid-19. But the good news is that no one would need to scour around to hunt for high protein sources, since they are easily available, come in variety for all kinds of food preferences, vegetarian and non-vegetarian, and are affordable”

Dr. Suresh Itapu, Nutraceutical Expert & Director, NutriTech India: “As the Indian population majorly depends on vegetarian sources for protein, plant-based sources like soybean can be promoted as major source of the macronutrient. India also runs world’s largest feeding programs so promoting soy protein products in these programs will go a long way in alleviating malnutrition”

World Food Day may be an annual event that takes place on 16th October, but it’s a campaign of commitments and action that should occur all year round.

Proteins might be slipping out of India’s shopping cart. Here’s why!

Grocery shopping trips have become a staple weekend activity in most households. Lengthy shopping lists, careful budgeting, and an occasional indulgence – they’re all a part and parcel of what it takes to keep the kitchen up and running. For some, this can be a daunting task, simply because we individuals today are spoilt for choice. For many, grocery shopping is an opportunity to experiment with a trending superfood, try the latest celebrity-endorsed diet or adopt a new healthy eating philosophy recommended by a friend – all in the bid to ‘eat right’.

But, do the choices we make at the grocery store really result in good nutrition for our family?

Several studies say No!

A 2019 study published by EAT-Lancet discovered that Indians on average eat more simple carbohydrates (rice and flour), less complex carbohydrates, less protein (both animal and plant-based), and less fruit and vegetables. Similarly, the Indian Consumer Market 2020 report revealed that in urban areas, beverages, refreshments, and processed foods account for the highest monthly expenditure, while rural households spend the most on cereals; Indians spend only one-third of their food budgets on protein-rich foods.

 This is particularly concerning since protein deficiency in India is more prevalent than it is known, with nearly 73% urban Indians being protein deficient and about 93% are unaware of their daily protein requirements (IMRB 2017).

To understand why protein isn’t finding its place in the shopping carts of most Indian households, the Right to Protein initiative reached out to 2,142 Indian mothers – the primary decision-makers of a household’s nutrition intake – across 16 cities in India for a survey conducted by commissioned research agency, Nielsen. The results of this study titled the Protein Paradox study, highlighted that there exists a strong sense of confusion about protein among mothers, which seems to indicate that misinformation and misattribution are the driving forces of protein deficiency in Indian households.

An ace celebrity Nutritionist and contributor to the protein Paradox Study, Nmami Agarwal said, “The biggest hurdle is lack of awareness about the importance of dietary protein. The major cause of concern is that most people don’t think protein is an essential component of the diet, and unlike calcium or iron deficiency, protein deficiency is still not taken very seriously […] There is a need of mass-awareness through government-led campaigns making the general population aware about the importance of protein, its sources, requirements, and health implications. Health care practitioners especially dieticians and nutritionists can raise awareness on an individual basis or conduct workshops or seminars to bridge the protein deficiency gap.”

When asked to identify common sources of plant and animal-based protein, most mothers surveyed were unable to correctly identify 8 of 11 protein-rich food items presented to them. While they correctly identified dal and pulses, eggs, and nuts like almonds as being protein-rich, they overestimated the protein content in common food items like milk, green leafy vegetables, fruits, roti, and curd. Meanwhile, extremely important protein sources, both animal-based like seafood, chicken, mutton, and lamb, as well as plant-based such as oats, millets, soy, cheese, peanut butter, and paneer were all incorrectly perceived to contain low protein content. Not only this, nearly 81% of mothers incorrectly believe that the regular Indian diet consisting of roti, dal, but rice is also enough for daily protein needs. As a result, most protein-rich food choices made by households are limited to pulses and dairy alone.

This means that while basic staples dominate the shopping list, misinformation further leads to the ignorance of protein-rich ingredients– and the foods that should be at the dining to table, remain in the grocery store aisle at the end of the shopping trip.

Therefore, here are three simple tips to reverse this detrimental pattern on your next grocery run:

  1. Make a smart shopping list with the intention to avoid missing out on essential macro and micro-nutrients
  2. Use freely available tools like the Protein Index to identify the right protein-rich foods and make your kitchen protein sufficient
  3. Opt for whole foods instead of processed or packaged foods and beware of misleading claims on product labels.

Good nutrition starts with smart choices in the grocery store. Once you take a step forward towards healthy and balanced meals with adequate protein, there is no looking back!

Does India Really Know About Protein? Where Is The Protein Paradox Leading Us?

Did you ever stop yourself from buying a bottle of peanut butter because of its fat content? Was there a time when you put down a block of cheese or packet of soy nuts because they weren’t a part of your new diet? We hate to burst your bubble, but those were high protein foods that were wrongfully ignored – and you may be a subject to India’s Protein Paradox!

When we set out to speak to over 2000 mothers (the primary decision-makers of a household’s food intake) about protein, we were met with a shocking revelation – while 95% of Indian mothers recognized protein as a macronutrient and believed it was “very important”, only 3% really understood why they should consume it at all! Moreover, a majority could not even correctly identify more than 3 protein-rich foods from a list of 11 ingredients. The survey also highlighted that about 82% of Indian mothers with kids feel that they should focus more on vitamin and energy than proteins for their children. Meanwhile, 81% of mothers were under the belief that eating basic meals with dal, rice, and roti provides adequate protein. This is evidence of the fact that in a country like India, where daily meals are carbohydrate-heavy, macronutrients like protein that have traditionally been overlooked as an important component of daily meals.

So, does India really know about protein? The short answer is, NO!

What the Protein Paradox study finally reveals is that Indian households have held on to certain misconceptions that may have directly contributed to the gradual declining of protein intake in the country (NSSO) and existing protein deficiency in India (IMRB). But it remains an under-debated issue today, making it not just a public health problem, but also a behavioral one.

What’s the solution?

With it comes to food, there is a wide-held belief that ‘we are what we eat’. The intake of the right kind of food and nutrition dictates our well-being. In fact, the year 2020 has reminded us of the importance of eating right, making good nutrition a priority, shopping mindfully, and working with sustainable solutions for long-term health and wellbeing. It’s no doubt that the foundation of health is in consuming the right kind of food, in the right quantities, and through the right sources. And this is why it is important for citizens to be nutritionally aware.

Citizens can learn more from public health awareness initiatives that have been focusing on increasing awareness about adequate protein consumption for overall better health and nutrition while debunking several myths around protein consumption in India. Referring to publicly available protein-rich food guides and tools can be used in consideration of one’s physiological status to make dietary changes at an individual level. As per the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) given by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for Indians, 0.8 gm to 1 gm protein per kg body weight, per day is sufficient to meet the basic nutritional requirements. An effective way to do so would be to ensure that at every meal, 1/4th of the plate is filled with protein.

There may be a long road ahead to solve India’s Protein Paradox for good. But it is up to us to get a jump-start by remembering to exercise our Right To Protein!

All you need to know about India’s Protein Paradox

Protein Paradox, a 16-city study with over 2,000 mothers across India, finds key challenges in the protein intake of Indian households. From poor understanding to myths and misinformation, read on to find out the three key trends and causes that is making us eliminate protein from our daily diets:

Protein Paucity

While protein awareness exists, there is a low knowledge of protein sources which is causing poor protein consumption in Indian households. The Protein Paradox study brings forth a worrying trend of Protein Paucity in India – the lack of protein consumption in Indian homes due to poor understanding of protein as a macronutrient, leading to the elimination of protein in the daily diet.

The study shows that although 95% of Indian mothers surveyed claim to know protein as a macronutrient, only 3% of the population really understand the prominent functions of protein or why one should consume it. If we compare cities, 82% mothers residing in mini metros such as Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Hyderabad were unable to correctly associate protein with its functions and attributed low importance to protein consumption as a part of balanced meals. So, while eight out of ten mothers believe protein is “very important”, protein is not adequately included in their daily diet. This has detrimental consequences not just for the mothers’ health, but also for the health of their families as mothers tend to be the main decision-makers on food preparation in Indian households.

Mighty barriers of misinformation and myths are overshadowing protein consumption in Indian homes. India’s Protein Paradox survey revealed various myths and misconceptions which dilute the importance of protein and create barriers for its inclusion in daily diets.

More than 70% of Indian mothers surveyed believe in myths that protein is difficult to digest, leads to weight gain, is only for ‘body-builders’ and is expensive to procure. Furthermore, an average more than 85% of the cohort of mothers who believe that protein leads to weight gain also agreed that they would prioritise the consumption of vitamins and carbohydrates rather than protein for themselves and their children.

Protein Pinch

Indian households reduce protein intake to a pinch amongst basic staples, as most protein sources remain unidentifiable.

While earlier findings reveal that the consumption of protein is not a priority in most households, it was even more concerning to find that most of the Indian mothers don’t know the key sources of protein. During the survey, most mothers failed to correctly identify 8 of 11 protein-rich food items presented to them. Furthermore, 81% of mothers incorrectly believe that just a regular Indian diet consisting of roti, dal, rice is enough for daily protein needs. As a result, dairy and pulses remain the primary high-protein sources of protein in majority Indian households. These beliefs, coupled with an inability to identify the correct functions and sources of protein lead to low protein consumption, despite 85% of Indian mothers believing that protein is important for health.

What next?

The solution to our current predicament outlined by the India Protein Paradox study points towards nudging a behavioural change in the people’s mindset regarding protein. This includes bridging the gap between knowledge and practice, with informed perceptions. However, it can be best accomplished through various stakeholders like government or organizational bodies, food industry, educational institutes, media, nutritionists, and other health experts coming together for the nutritional wellbeing of India’s masses.
