Coronavirus Outbreak: Build a better immunity with protein-rich diet

With all the concerns around Novel Corona virus or COVID-19, there’s never been a better need to practice prevention and optimize our immune systems to keep ourselves healthy or at least less at-risk. While we are aware of everything that WHO and CDC has been recommending – from using disinfectants, wearing masks 24/7, washing our hands every 15 minutes, not staying in close proximity to anyone and cancelling travel plans or gatherings in large numbers – not many of us are taking account of the role that a strong immunity plays during such a pandemic.

Nutrition is a critical factor of a good immune system– like most things, immunity functions better when it’s well-nourished. For instance, protein malnutrition is associated with delayed healing and slower recovery. In other words, if the body does not have enough of the building blocks, there is likely to be significant impairment of immunity. Protein is a determinant of an individual’s nutrition and immune response, so in times like these, eating protein-rich food becomes the utmost priority, boosting our immune system and giving us the best chance to fight against the virus.

Coronavirus Symptoms  Actions To Prevent Coronavirus Spread

Here’s a quick look at the food items that help us improve our immunity and can help us fight COVID-19 better:

  • Yogurt

Yogurts are known to contain “live and active bacteria”. These live bacteria prevent germs and other germs from entering into our body and stimulate our immunity system to help fight diseases. Not only is yogurt rich in vitamins, but also a rich source of protein, that gives our immune system a boost. Hence, ensure to include yogurt as a part of your meal daily, not just during the time of covid-19. As yogurt keeps your gut happy, ensures you meet your daily protein requirements, and is a part of healthy eating.

  • Eggs

Eggs are known to be a rich source of proteins that take a lead role in helping protect our body from billions of bacteria, build our immunity, and provide strength. Eggs are known to contain zinc and selenium, with selenium being a powerful antioxidant that plays a vital role in cell health and is found in very few food. A single egg is known to provide a quarter of your daily selenium requirement. You could just say, an egg a day keeps the virus away!

  • Vitamin C

Vitamin C is known to increase the production of White blood cells in our body, that fights infections and keeps away any diseases. However just like protein, our body does not store vitamins or produce them, hence we should ensure the daily intake of foods or supplements that are rich in vitamin C. Below are popular citrus fruits:

  • Lemon
  • grapefruit
  • oranges
  • lemons
  • Clementine

  • Chicken

Chicken is a rich source of Protein that helps build muscle, repair tissues, build our immune system and fights illness. It is an excellent addition to a healthy diet. Chicken is also known to be an excellent source of many nutrients for growth, such as vitamin B12, and taurine.

  • Turmeric

Haven’t we all heard of the wonders turmeric offers when it comes to controlling inflammation? Consuming anti-inflammatory rich foods such as Turmeric is important when it comes to strengthening your immune system. This ‘wonder spice’ has a compound called curcumin that offers a host of benefits such as treating osteoarthritis, clearing throat, and reducing muscle damage caused due to exercise. Drinking a glass of turmeric with milk every night is the best way to keep the infections a mile away.

These are just a few ways you could stay a fighting chance to keep the virus away and build your immune strong. Moreover, it is the quality of protein rich foods that matter, more that the quantity of foods that we eat.  This alone won’t prevent transmission of coronavirus, as we also need to stay vigilant with hand-washing, maintaining distance from others and staying indoors when symptoms occur.

**No diet or lifestyle modification – aside from physical distancing, and practicing proper hygiene – can protect you from developing COVID-19. The strategies outlined above may boost your immune health, but they don’t protect specifically against COVID-19.
