Your Post-Holi Survival Guide To Get Back On Track And Detoxify Yourself

The fun and cheerful time spent during Holi is undeniable with festive feasts like Thandai, Pakora, Phirni, Bhaang, Gujia, Ghewar, and the never-ending street food. And after spending an entire day in the outdoors under the hot sun playing with colors and water, the after-effects of those on our skin, feet, nails, and hair are not so good! One desperately seeks to get some relief and post care to bring back their old glow.

Here’s a guide to detoxify yourself post-Holi, that helps you get back on track and keep yourself in good shape:

  • Working out/ physical activity is important: You may be too tired from being in sun and in-outdoors, but you must ensure to go for brisk walks and workout to burn out all that you consumed in Holi. Working out could be in the form of yoga, walking, gym session or any activity that involves body movements; to ensure that our body is back to normal functioning and active. And working out also helps aid digestion and burn calories.

  • Add foods which are rich in protein: Consuming protein rich foods such as eggs, paneer, lentil, milk, yogurt, chicken, fish etc. that are loaded with protein is one of the best way to ensure you are eating right, as protein helps build immunity and keeps one feeling full for longer hours. One of the best ways to ensure you are consuming protein in right quantities during such times is to ensure that you fill at least ¼ of your plate with protein for each meal. Give yourself a break from highly processed foods that are sugar laden and contain high carbs.

  • Drink enough water to stay hydrated: Drink enough water if you are looking to detoxify your body. Its best to hydrate yourself by drinking coconut water, fresh fruit juice, lemon, and ginger water to detoxify and cleanse your gut. Besides drinking enough water throughout the day keeps your energy levels high.

  • Treat your skin and hair with essential oils: The struggle to get rid of color from your hair and skin is real. And the trick here is to apply coconut oil on your skin and hair, as they act as conditioning agents and help strengthen your roots and nourish your scalp. Don’t use harsh products and exfoliators as they might react to your skin due to sunburns from being out for too long. And lastly, using a hair serum helps in restoring balance and leaving your hair looking healthy and smooth.

  • Eat light but eat right! Since you have already stuffed yourself with food of all sorts that are high on calories, sugar, oily food, and salt during Holi, is it best to eat healthy home cooked meals that are rich in protein, low on carbohydrates, and high on fibers. Few home cooked meal options could be: Dal khichdi, Moong salad, vegetable soup, vegetable juice, fresh fruits and vegetables that are rich in protein, and meets you daily nutritional value.

Guilt-Free Healthy Sweet That Will Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth

In almost every Indian household, there is no meal complete without a small bite or piece of dessert. Sometimes, we can’t even wait till we finish the meal so that we can indulge in straight for the desert on the table. Festive occasions, off-course, give us great excuse to eating sweets that are rich, flavourful and brimmed with sweetness.

Often time our attention goes towards planning healthy meals for the day, that we rarely give a second thought about mid-day snacking or post meal cravings. So, when cravings or hunger strikes in, we tend to eat anything that we lay our eyes on or have at home. And in such a situation, even if we end up having a small bite of it, we are galloped with guilt and have done the damage. But here’s some good news for those out there with a sweet tooth who looking for something healthy to satisfy their sweet cravings:

Peanut and Jaggery Chikki

Peanuts are considered as an excellent source of vegetarian protein. Meanwhile, jaggery, which is found in most Indian kitchens, is loaded with antioxidants, iron and other nutrients. It’s a healthier alternative to refined sugar. Additionally, Jaggery is packed with antioxidants that helps build the immunity and further keep diseases away. Together when these ingredients are combined they make a chikki. A combination that is heathy and delicious at the same time. Not to forget, the chikki also has delightful brittle texture. You can either have it as a dessert or an on-the-go snack too.

Chia Seed Pudding

Chia seeds contain 17 gram of protein per 100 gram serving. Moreover, they are a complete protein, that is, containing all the nine essential amino acids that cannot be made by the body. Combined with fibre- and potassium-rich banana, the pudding also makes for a healthy breakfast option for those who wish to kick-start their day on a sweet note.

Dark Chocolate

Chocolate is the last ingredient to come to anyone’s mind when they’re thinking of ‘healthy foods’. Research, however, suggests that dark chocolate is nutritious and has protein too. When had in moderate amounts, its antioxidant properties may reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes among other benefits.

Dates and Nuts Bars

Dates are not only a good source of protein but also loaded with vitamins and minerals. They have natural fructose content, so they are a good substitute for refined sugar and they can fuel your body with energy. The no-bake bars, when laced with a mix of walnuts, pistachios or hazelnuts, will give you an additional protein boost. The best part is that you can enjoy these bars not only as an after-meal dessert but also as a pre-workout snack, a munchie between meals or even as a quick bite on your daily commute.

Yogurt Parfait

Who said yogurt can only be had plain or as raita? Rich in protein, yogurt can also be used to whip up non-messy parfait jars by simply layering it up with toasted oats and nuts such as pecans and almonds. Regular yogurt can be substituted with Greek yogurt that contains healthy fats and may help you feel fuller for longer.

So, the next time you crave a sweet but are worried about weight gain, fear not. Instead of striking out desserts from your meals completely, satisfy your desire with these healthy yet flavourful alternatives. They’re sure to calm your sweet cravings at the same time boost your nutrition levels and ensure your physical wellbeing too.
