Children are no doubt the future, and before the next generation grow up and change the world as we know it, its significant to build a strong foundation in all aspects of their lives. Often parents and the society get occupied while focusing on empowering better learning, instilling values, and behaviour patterns to live in the society. What the society tends to miss out on is focusing on building healthy eating habits at young age. This is evident now with the number of health and lifestyle problems that our current generation is struggling with – which could’ve been avoided if they were in an environment that focused on nutrition as another subject of life.

So far, we all have learnt that food groups like proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and fiber are essential to our body. But that’s where it stops. Children have very few sources of acquiring knowledge – schools, parents, families and friends. A 2020 Indian Consumer Market report suggested that in urban areas, beverages, refreshments, and processed foods account for the highest expenditure while protein-rich food constitutes only one-third of their food budget. Such an important nutrient like Protein, has slowly been slipping out of daily diets due to various reasons

The India’s Protein Paradox Report by Right To Protein unveiled three main reasons –

  • Protein Paucity – while mothers understand the need for protein, they don’t know the protein sources and it benefits.
  • Protein Psych – misinformation about protein exists in India where it is believed that protein is only for fitness freaks, and protein is expensive – which justifies the lack of protein in our diet.
  • Protein Pinch -About 81% of mothers believed that the regular Indian diet consisting of roti, dal, and rice is enough to meet the daily protein requirements and their lack/poor knowledge of protein rich ingredients limits their consumption of protein rich foods that should be consumed for a healthy wellbeing.

If we want kids today to have stronger immunity and an efficient metabolism, it is time to alter their daily diets by adding more protein rich and nutritious meals to their plates.
