Suggested Protein Rich food to eat basis your zodiac sign

Were you ever in a situation where you or your friend read out loud your zodiac sign and you were left in awe, and thought to yourself, “this is totally me!”. As crazy as this sounds your sun sign is what defines your personality, your character, your health, eating habits, your mood, how you feel about things certain things.

In short, your zodiac sign is your road to get to know yourself better. For Instance, if you are a Cancer, you’re during stressful time, people often lose their appetite, while others tend to eat more while they are stressed. Additionally, for cancer in their appetite or weight can make them feel upset.

A person’s zodiac sign is determined by their date of birth. It explains their mood, behaviour, and personality traits – a concept dating back to the Babylonians and later.

Did you know that a zodiac sign can also influence one’s grocery list? It’s widely believed that each zodiac sign enjoys a different relationship with food. So, checkout your food horoscope below to see if your tastes agree with your astrological:

Aries: High on energy and always on the move, Arians can have milk, spinach, brown rice and beans to maintain a healthy diet. Many of these foods are also coolants and sources of calcium, which is required by this sign since it’s ruled by the Fire element and hence, considered more prone to heartburns and acne issues.

Taurus: Taureans are gourmands who savour every bite. Seafood, eggs and wheat can help not only with their protein requirement but also with iodine intake required to combat thyroid issues that may arise as an Earth sign.

Gemini: The symbol for this sign is twins. And balancing the twin personalities can lead many Geminis to worry a lot. Milk, cheese and almonds can help relax and keep their nerves in check.

Cancer: Like their nature, a Cancerian’s stomach is sensitive too. Yogurt, kale, broccoli, pine nuts and a comfort breakfast of oats and eggs can keep their digestive tract healthy.

Leo: Leos love quality food. They also have an active routine that leads to burning a lot of carbs. Whole wheat, rice, pumpkin seeds, a mix of nuts and small amounts of dark chocolate can hold Leos in good stead.

Virgo: Avocados, eggs, almonds and other fresh seafood can help people of this zodiac sign, who are prone to health issues related to intestines and nervous system.

Libra: A high-protein diet that includes foods such as chicken, fish, corn, peas, spinach and wheat is important to keep a Libran energised. Eating light can also help them stay calm and prevent mood swings.

Scorpio: A feisty water sign, Scorpios feel emotions intensely, which can be problematic sometimes. Foods such as cottage cheese and asparagus can help lighten the mood.

Sagittarius: A diet rich in protein – including chicken, fish, whole grain foods – is recommended for Sags because of their adventurous, outgoing nature.

Capricorn: Foods such as milk, yogurt, cheese, chicken, fish, eggs or fresh foods can help people under this sign – symbolised by a goat – meet their protein requirement and maintain their bones and teeth, said to be weaker than the other signs.

Aquarius: Aquarians are ruled by the Air element that impacts circulatory system. So, protein sources such as lobster, tuna, spinach, corn, almonds, walnuts can help Aquarius natives maintain the balance of blood sugar.

Pisces: Protein sources like lean beef, lamb, egg yolks, oysters and kidney beans can help keeping Pisceans strong and boost their immunity.

This list is by no means exhaustive. However, it shows how each sign requires different foods that not only help provide protein and a balance of other nutrients that are essential for our physical and mental wellbeing. So, the next time you’re making a grocery list, it would be good to add in foods based on your zodiac sign too.

Paneer Tikka Masala: A High Protein Diet

Paneer Tikka Masala is a delicious restaurant style gravy dish which is made by simmering paneer tikka in a spicy onion tomato based gravy. It is a dish rich in protein and can be easily made at home. Here is how to make Paneer Tikka Masala Recipe.

Paneer Tikka Masala served in a bowl.

Today, let us talk about something which is very important for our body, “Protein Intake”.

As we all know protein plays an important role in the growth of our body, as it improves muscle health, increases metabolism, builds tissues and repairs bones.

We should make sure that we consume food items which are high in protein on the daily basis.

And therefore, this year, on the occasion of the 71st Republic day in India, let me introduce you to a national health awareness campaign “Right to Protein”.

Republic Day is one of the most important days for India as the constitution came into existence this day.

It is also the day when government make all the necessary amendments and comes up with new rights and policies to improve the well-being of the nation.

So, what can be a better day to tell you about ‘Protein’ – which is so important yet overlooked, with 73% of diets in urban India being protein deficient.

You must be wondering what is “Right To Protein”? It is an initiative where a nation-wide health advocacy campaign aims at giving individuals their right to consume protein.

This campaign has launched an online general ‘protein calculator’, which will help Indians across different age-groups, to track down their daily protein intake and make necessary amendments in their everyday diet.

This “Protein-O-Meter” will ask you basic questions regarding your body profile, type of lifestyle and kind of meals consumed during the entire day.

It will then calculate the average proteins required against the amount consumed an any given day, specifically for you.

Not only this, the website will also provide you the necessary information on protein-rich foods, healthy habits, and tips.

Here is the link to Protein-O-Meter and Protein Index, www.righttoprotein.com/protein-o-meter/

As much as I like to cook, I always focus on what ingredients are being used in my recipes and do those ingredients fulfill the necessary protein requirements.

I also make sure that my meals include protein, as I have a teenage son and it is very important for his overall growth.

Paneer being my favourite ingredient which is very rich in protein, I am making a Paneer Tikka Masala today, which is one of his favourites too.

So without wasting any time, let’s dive into the recipe of Paneer Tikka Masala, so that even you can make it for your meals and include protein in your diet.

Paneer Tikka Masala is one of the famous North Indian Paneer dishes that is perfect for a simple lunch or dinner at home or a big occasion.

One more advantage of making this dish at home is that you can also make some Paneer Tikka for snacks or sides.

It is a win-win situation. Make this restaurant-style Paneer Tikka Masala at home with this easy recipe. I can assure you it is finger licking good and all your guests and family members are going to love it.

What is Paneer Tikka Masala?

Paneer Tikka Masala is a marinated, grilled cottage cheese (paneer) and vegetable skewer dunked in a rich onion tomato gravy.

Marinate chunks of paneer and vegetable (onion and bell peppers) in spiced hung curd and grill it on a tawa, grill pan, barbecue or in an oven.

To make restaurant-style paneer tikka masala at home, use Kashmiri red chilli powder, which renders a beautiful colour to paneer tikka without adding any artificial colours.

Paneer Tikka Masala Gravy

Paneer tikka masala gravy is a rich, spicy gravy, unlike paneer butter masala. It has a sweet yet spicy flavour, which is perfect to be served with naan or lachha paratha.

The gravy is made with onions and tomatoes simmered with whole spices to get the best flavour.

Can you freeze Paneer Tikka Masala?

Yes, you can freeze the marinated paneer tikka masala. It is recommended that you freeze the paneer tikka and the gravy separately.

Marinate the paneer and vegetables and marinate them before grilling.

Put them in a Ziploc or freezer safe bags and freeze for up to 3-4 days.

Freeze the gravy separately in freezer-safe bag or container for 2-3 months.

Once you are ready to serve, just thaw the paneer and gravy at room temperature for 3-4 hours.

Grill the paneer and vegetables, warm the gravy and then mix the two.

Tips to restaurant-style Paneer Tikka Masala

Use ripe and red tomatoes to get the sweetness and avoid the sour unripe tomatoes.

Make fresh paneer at home, if possible. Use fresh hung curd to marinate.

Adding Kashmiri Red Chilli Powder in place of regular chilli powder gives a nice colour to the gravy without making it too spicy.

Earn your Right To Protein this Republic Day

Earn your Right To Protein this Republic Day

Currently there are 195 countries in the world & guess which one is celebrating its 71st Republic day today?
It’s a no brain-er, but still we’re laying it out for you guys: It is none other than the largest democracy in the world & our motherland- India!
Yes, we’re celebrating our 71st Republic day as a Republic Nation.
Across our country, there are a lot of reservations about eating meat & non-vegetarian food in general. As a result, most of our diets lack sufficient quantity of protein. This Republic Day, let’s try to improve our overall well-being by exerting our Right to Protein. This mostly involves adding protein elements in our diet, irrespective of animal or plant based proteins. This doesn’t just stop at you as it is our duty to influence those around us so that everyone can lead a healthier life style.

Right To Protein!

It is not unknown to the masses that our country has a huge population & a majority of the population does not have the privilege of consuming well balanced meals throughout the day. Hence, the awareness for this campaign is crucial to our development as a nation.
Ever wondered why majority of foreign athletes pack more power? It is mostly because of their protein rich diets! A protein rich diet not only boosts metabolism, but also helps in building muscle etc. With that been said, we take the pledge of making better & healthier diet choices & increasing the quantity of protein in our diet (Not that we consume any less).
We also consider It our responsibility to spread the knowledge & influence others. You should do it too!

We are Bengalis from the city of joy, Kolkata & majority of our protein intake comes from fishes & other meats.

However, since we pledged to make better diet choices, we’ll talk about a personal favorite of ours: soya bean. These remarkable nuggets pack a lot of protein & the reason why we chose a vegetarian item is to include those who do not prefer non-veg. Soya bean is a favorite back in our home town.
One of our favorite preparations is the Soya Chaap. It is insanely tasty & if prepared well, tastes as good as meat.

So let us show you how you can earn your right to protein !

Soya beans soaked for 4 hours and drained 1/2 cup

Refined flour 3/4 cup cup

Salt to taste

Wooden ice cream sticks as required

Yogurt 1/2 cup

Gram flour 2-3 tablespoons

Chaat masala 1/2 teaspoon

Turmeric powder 1/4 teaspoon

Red chilli powder 1/2 teaspoon

Garam masala powder 1/4 teaspoon

Ginger-garlic paste 1 teaspoon

Oil to deep fry

Refined flour slurry as required

Soya mince as required

Onion rings to serve

Lemon slices to serve

Fresh mint to garnish

Let us walk you through the course of preparation:
  • Blend soya beans with some water
  • Mix refined flour with soya paste & salt to a semi-stiff dough
  • Break the dough into balls & flatten them like a Roti
  • Cut into strips & wrap it around a wooden stick ( we use ice cream sticks as they look appealing) Voila, we made the chaaps
  • Heat water & blanch the strips (4-5 min). Then drain the water & keep them in some ice for the mixture to harden
  • Take curd in a bowl along with gram flour, turmeric, red chilli, garam masala powder, ginger & garlic paste & a little water. Mix well with a pinch of salt
  • Heat oil in a non-stick pan, Take the leftover refined flour in a bowl
  • Dip the chaaps in the curd mixture, coat it with the refined flour & fry till golden brown. If you like to add a bit of zing, add minced soya after the refined flour. This adds some crunch to the Soya Chaaps.
After this we generally use napkins to absorb the excess oil. Tastes best with some lemon juice freshly squeezed on top.
As mentioned before, majority of our diets are mostly protein deficient as we gorge on carbs. This just keeps us full for a longer period with little benefit. We hope you take the pledge along with us to fight the battle against malnutrition.
Coming down to the Right to Protein, which is a is a nation-wide public health initiative to increase general awareness about the importance of adequate and quality protein in everyday diet. It is an initiative to educate the people in India about the importance of protein for their general health, fitness and well being. The #RightToProtein campaign aspires to act as a catalyst in promoting consumption of different forms of proteins amongst Indians for better overall nutrition. Under this initiative, there is a protein calculator called the Protein-O-Meter, which calculates one’s daily protein requirement basis basic individual information such as body profile, type of lifestyle and meals consumed at different times during the day. Apart from information on one’s possible protein gap, the platform also provides information on protein-rich foods, healthy habits, tips and busting myths about protein.
This takes the Indian dietary preferences into consideration & across all age groups.
As they say, our body is made up of 75% of what we eat! A healthier diet leads to a better lifestyle & that directly translates into better fitness, working capability & longevity in general.
That’s all from our side!
Do let us know if you have anything to say to us about the recipe or the post.
We’d love to hear from you!
Till then, Happy Republic Day & Bon Apetit!

How Chicken Momos can be the Best Snack to Improve Protein Intake?

How Chicken Momos can be the Best Snack to Improve Protein Intake?

From steamed and fried momos to tandoori and afghani momos, to wheat and chilli momos, the versatile dumpling has become one of the most popular street foods of Delhi, so much so, that the earlier saying of “Dilli ki Chaat” has gradually evolved into “Dilli ke Momos“.

Fancy restaurants, student-friendly cafes and  street-side vendors, momos seem to everywhere. Being the typical Delhi-ite that I am, I can safely admit that I am, much like a lot of Dilli-walas,  addicted to momos. Piping hot, stuffed with juicy, meaty filling and served alongside a fiery red chutney, the aroma wafting all around a momo stall is enough to rev my appetite. Irresistible.

Considering that momos are now a part of my weekly diet, I cannot disregard the fact that it is tasty yet rich source of protein from whole food. It is known that, chicken is one of the best protein options, with very little fat and all essential amino acids. So, momos have trickled to my kitchen and I ended up making these beautiful rice chicken momos – rich in protein and perfect to meet your daily protein requirement. Fuss-free to make, these rice chicken momos become a meal, with the protein from chicken and the carbohydrates from basmati rice.

Interesting, isn’t it?

Rice and Buckwheat Momos

Rice and Buckwheat Momos

If you don’t believe me, try the Protein-O-Meter which calculates protein content of our meals and each piece of chicken momos can add 2 gms to your daily protein requirement!. With Protein-O-Meter, not only could I calculate my daily protein requirements, but it also helped me find it I have a protein gap and deficiency. So basically, not only did I make these momos with ease, but I even added on to the health quotient by improving my protein intake.

You can also explore  “Right to Protein” which helped me explore protein-rich whole foods from Protein Index (Insert link) and I also learned how protein helps to improve muscle health, boost metabolism, build tissues, lower blood pressure and repair bones et al.

The fact that 73% of urban Indians are protein deficient, is a cause of worry and one that needs to be addressed.

So, on this 71st Republic Day, let’s determine to become more vigilant of our protein intake, and if insufficient, focus on increasing its intake. A few little tweaks is all it’ll take, much like how it took me, while replacing mindless snacks with chicken momos,  to improve my protein consumption, and lead us to a healthier, happier self 🙂

White Rice Or Quinoa: Nutritionally Which One Leads The Board?

White Rice or Quinoa: Nutritionally Which one leads the board?

White Rice or Quinoa: Nutritionally Which one leads the board?

White rice has been one of the most commonly consumed grains over the years while, quinoa has emerged as a healthy alternative and gained attention only in the recent years.

Rice is basically a cereal grain. White rice has the husk, bran, and germ removed, which lowers its nutritional value. Quinoa, on the other hand, is the seed of the goosefoot plant and is high in nutrition. Having said that, quinoa is often referred to as a grain because of its similar nutritional and culinary properties as rice and other grains. In fact, it is a seed not only healthier than rice but also is native to South America which was first grown 5,000 years ago and belongs to same family as spinach and beets.

No wonder why quinoa has become one of the most consumed and sought-after health foods in the world, thanks to its high levels of minerals and fiber, and the fact that it is a complete protein, meaning it contains all the nine essential amino acids required to keep one healthy and nourished.

Though it’s undeniable that white rice has long made a delicious and affordable carbohydrate base for a wide variety of world cuisines, it doesn’t exactly have a stellar nutritional resume. In comparison, quinoa is rich in both fiber and protein, and contains much higher amounts of nutrients while allowing for a similar texture.

Both Rice and quinoa are used in similar ways, have their own nutritional benefits, and can often be used interchangeably in recipes. But when it comes to the healthiest option to turn to, it’s quinoa that takes the cake. Here are the 5 reasons why quinoa is more nutritious than, rice.

Quinoa is a complete protein

For such a tiny seed, quinoa has a lot of protein. One cup of cooked has almost 8 grams of protein content. It is one of the very few vegetarian sources of protein that is complete protein. This means it contains all the nine essential amino acids your body needs.

White rice, on the other hand, is an incomplete protein, a comfort food and a single cup of rice contains 2 times lesser amount of protein thank quinoa. And while rice has a place in the healthy diet, it’s definitely high in carbs.

Including protein in your daily diet has proved to have multiple benefits such as building bones, gain muscles, repairing tissue, and reduced food cravings.

Quinoa can keep you fuller for longer –

Quinoa is rich in fiber, one cup of it contains 5 grams of fiber which is significantly higher than rice. Fiber is an important nutrient because it reduces the risk of developing heart diseases and keeps you fuller for longer. It also helps you keeping your digestive system healthy and manages your weight, controls blood circulation, and sugar level.

While, rice has only 0.6 grams of fiber as the husk and bran is removed, it has very low level of which lowers the nutritional value in comparison to quinoa.

Quinoa is rich in magnesium –

Magnesium is important for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps to maintain normal nerve and muscle function, supports a healthy immune system, keeps the heartbeat steady, and helps bones remain strong. It also helps adjust blood glucose levels. It aids in the production of energy and protein.

A cup of quinoa has 118 milligrams (mg) of magnesium, making it one of the best food sources of the mineral. In comparison, white rice has 19 mg which is why, it is suggested to include quinoa in you daily diet over white rice.

Quinoa contains healthy carbs –

Even though, quinoa and rice have similar amounts of carbohydrates – 39 g and 44 g per cup, respectively. The quality of carbs differs. There are two types of carbs available; ‘good’ or ‘bad’, that is related to where each food falls on the glycemic index, which in turn helps you understand the food effects on the blood glucose level.

Therefore, a food which is at the upper end of the GI, such as white rice, raises blood glucose levels higher than a food on the lower end of the GI. Low-GI foods are generally ones that contain protein and fiber, such as quinoa.

Quinoa and Rice both can enhance the nutrient profile of Gluten-Free diets –

Quinoa and rice both are naturally gluten free. But quinoa has an upper hand here, as it is a great source of nutrition for those with celiac diseases or gluten intolerance. Rice, on the other hand, is a bit less nutritionally rich than quinoa.

However, the nutrition content is similar only if cross-contamination doesn’t happen during processing. Also, if you’re trying to cut flour out of your diet, both are great choices to help you stay on track.

While white rice is devoid of nutritional value and will always take the back seat in the health department, both quinoa and brown rice are super nutritious options that are good sources of minerals and fiber, are naturally gluten-free, and aid in essential bodily functions like digestion and blood sugar

All in all, Quinoa tops the list of healthy food alternatives, as it is not a grain, contains no wheat, is high in protein, comparatively low on carb, and comes in handy. It also has a host of other vitamins and minerals to keep you feeling full and light throughout the day.

Here’s Why Eating a Healthy Protein Rich Breakfast is Important

Diets And Recipes

Here’s Why Eating a Healthy Protein Rich Breakfast is Important

Breakfast, widely known as break-fast is the most important meal of the day. Being said that, you must have encountered your parents or grandparents stressing the significance of eating a wholesome breakfast at least once in your lifetime. Various Studies suggest that eating breakfast regularly is associated with good health — however, the timing of the meal, as well as what’s eaten during breakfast is what really matters. Due to the fast-paced lifestyle, we often forget to prepare a healthy meal and even get chaotic between what to eat or not to eat. Before jumping into what should be consumed, let’s understand why breakfast is important

Why breakfast is important?

As the name suggests, ‘breakfast’ means breaking the fast. When we sleep at night, our body is at rest but all functions in our body are working and consuming energy which is why our body and brain needs the energy in the morning to start the day.

Hence, it is important to balance your first meal of the day with food rich in nutrients and amino acids that will help you stay energetic all day.

But often, we make the mistake of loading our breakfast with only carbs – for instance, a popular breakfast combination constitutes parathas with a cup of tea or coffee. Though carbs give instant energy to your body, but it isn’t the only necessary nutrient for leading a healthy life. Along with carbs, the ideal breakfast should include a combination of other nutrients as well – especially protein.

Proteins are one of the most vital nutrients our body needs for proper functioning. Consuming healthy protein-rich meals at the beginning of the day releases satiety hormones that helps in building muscle strength, aids weight loss and keeps you energetic all day. Moreover, having it within one to two hours of waking up would give your body an extra dose of energy to kick-start the day on the right note.

What should be the right breakfast?

A right breakfast should include a set of complex nutrients like carbohydrates, fats, fiber, antioxidants and most importantly protein-rich food items. Furthermore, nutritionists have stated that one should consume protein basis their body type. Though, it is difficult to judge the protein requirement of your body but, with the recently launched campaign ‘Right to Protein’, anyone can calculate their daily protein intake hassle-free by using Protein-o-Meter; which will ask basic questions on an individual’s body profile, type of lifestyle and kind of meals consumed at different times and will calculate the average proteins required by your body. Here are some of the options which can make your breakfast healthy:

Eggs: An egg is considered the healthiest and nutritious food loaded with vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, antioxidants and brain nutrients that most people don’t get enough in their daily diet. They are high in protein, but egg whites are almost pure protein.

Milk: It contains a little bit of almost every single nutrient needed by the human body and can provide several impressive health benefits and is an excellent source of high-quality protein.

Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt is one of the most popular breakfast choices amongst the millennials because it has twice as much protein as compared to any other type of yogurt. It’s also rich in bone-building calcium and probiotic bacteria, which is great for gut health.

Avocado: Avocados are one of the healthiest fruits which contain vital nutrients, omega-3 acids and is one of the most protein-rich fruit with a low sugar content.

Apart from the above-mentioned options, there are other forms of simple & delicious protein-rich foods available in the market which you can consider keeping stocked in your kitchen. But this doesn’t solve the problem because now that you know how much protein you need to keep yourself healthy but, finding out which food item contains what amount of protein is another tedious task. Don’t you worry because with the protein intake calculator, under the ‘Right to Protein’ campaign, they have introduced a one-stop solution of knowing the protein index, which will help you finding out just the right non-vegetarian or vegetarian food that is high in protein.

While a high-protein breakfast offers several health benefits, it is important to choose high-protein options that do not contain excess fat. Which is why it is suggested to consider having lean protein food as it’ll offer the benefits of a high-protein breakfast, without harmful effects like weight gain or increased cholesterol level that can stem from eating high-fat protein sources.

Best Protein Rich Foods You Should Eat Post Workout

Best Protein Rich Foods You Should Eat Post Workout

When you work-out to keep your body fit, the other factor that needs attention is the right kind of nutrition. Most of us try to find shortcuts with a couple of supplements. But, the ideal way is to mainly consume nutritious whole foods, especially before and after workouts, because that’s when energy levels fluctuate the most. It is important to fuel our bodies with the right kind of food to support muscle recovery, strength & growth. Often, one finds it difficult to figure out the right kind of post workout diet that would replenish the body and provide us with added energy.

Why is it important to eat right post-workout?

While exercising, the muscles draw out the stored glucose, called glycogen for energy and helps the body support the workout activity. This makes the body slightly deprived of glycogen and in the process the proteins in muscles also break down.

By maintaining the right nutritional balance post workout, you can restore your energy levels, reduce fatigue and thus, help the body repair muscles, replenish glycogen and build strength for future workouts. Therefore, foods rich in proteins and carbohydrates should be consumed. Protein is one such nutrient which is considered as the building block of the body comprised of chains of smaller molecules of amino acid. Without enough protein intake, the muscles will not heal after workout, and their growth will be limited.

Hence, adding protein rich foods like eggs, cottage cheese, greek yoghurt, soya proteins, chicken, nuts would speed up the recovery process, maximize exercise benefits, and help maintain lean muscles:

Eggs: Eggs are the perfect post-workout food as they’re loaded with high amount of proteins and are a great source of many other nutrients, which help your body repair after an intense gym session. One egg has 6 grams of protein, or 15% of your daily recommended value. So, having hard-boiled eggs paired with a piece of fresh fruit will replenish your glycogen stores, which usually depletes after a tough workout.

Soya proteins: Soy proteins are a type of legume that are naturally high in protein, is cholesterol free and relatively low in saturated fat. Also, including soy products in your post workout meals is essential as they contain fiber, and heart-healthy omega-3s fatty acids that helps in recovery of the muscles & gives an energy boast. Therefore, it is suggested to include tofu, soya milk, soya nuts etc. in your post workout diet.

Chicken: Chicken is a lean source of protein which is packed with all the necessary amino acids and is perfect for muscle-building. Moreover, chicken is versatile and can be prepared in a variety of ways. But consuming excessive amount of animal-based protein should be avoided as it lacks in some amino acids whereas vegetables & other vegan products like pulse etc. are whole source of essential proteins & nutrients.

Nuts: Nuts are a very popular form of healthy snacking that’s easily available and can be enjoyed in various forms. A handful of nuts can provide you with enough proteins and help in maintaining the insulin levels during & post workouts. Therefore, it is suggested to add a handful of nuts & seeds such as almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, cashews etc. in your workout diet. Even nut butters are a good alternative.

Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurts are more thick, creamy and delicious as compared to regular yogurt and has almost double the protein, less carbohydrates and half the sodium. You can add fruits like berries to your greek yogurt as it makes a perfect combination of carbohydrates & proteins. Carbohydrates in berries would help in fighting muscle soreness. On the other hand, protein is stored for a longer time and is beneficial to prevent muscle damage.

Cottage Cheese: Cottage cheese is an excellent source of casein, a protein just as effective at stimulating muscle growth as whey proteins. Due to high water content present in cottage cheese, it can help replenish fluids in your body after sweating it out in the gym. Although, casein is slower to digest than whey protein, it is more effective at preventing your muscles from breaking down after exercise.

Post-workout meals are very crucial for achieving workout goals. What you eat after your workout is just as important as what you eat before. Skip a post workout meal and you will slow down your ability to recover. A healthy diet is half the battle won. It doesn’t matter how hard you train- if you don’t pay attention to what you put in your body, it’s difficult to achieve the desired results.

6 Protein-Rich Ancient Indian Grains You Must Not Ignore

Grains are a part of staple diets of cultures around the world and have made an important contribution to daily nutrient requirements. They are the bedrock of any good diet plan. But, the irony is that health conscious people today fail to recognize the importance of ancient Indian grains and are making a switch to modern grains like oats and quinoa.

The truth is, our very own Indian ancient grains are all unprocessed unlike the modern ones and are full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and dietary fibers. This explains the reason why our grandparents were so active and had a good immunity to various diseases.

However, Indians today have started avoiding these local whole grains because of the false suggestions floating out there. It is being suggested by many nutritionists that these grains contain more of carbohydrates & fats which leads to weight gain. In fact, eating unprocessed whole grains does not lead to weight gain, whereas eating those hybrid forms of wheat & various other refined grains does.

So, do not get enamored with these modern grains and forego the Indian whole grains. Let us look at the 5 best nutrients & protein rich grains, which were always there on our grandparent’s plate that helped them stay fit:

Amaranth (Rajgira)

Amaranth or Rajgira is a super-nutritious grain and a major food crop of India. It is a great source of plant protein, which makes it beneficial for vegetarians. The protein content present in 100g of amaranth is 14g, which is higher as compared to other grains. It is also a great source of antioxidants and dietary fiber. The health benefits include strengthening of bones, improving vision, lowering high cholesterol level and managing diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, it is gluten-free, which makes it a perfect grain for individuals with celiac disease.

Buckwheat (Kuttu)

Buckwheat or Kuttu is not a grain, but a flour which is prepared from the leaves and flowers. It is commonly known in India as kuttu ka atta and is mainly consumed during the Navratra’s in various forms such as chapati, fritters etc. The protein content present in 100g of buckwheat is 13.2g and is of very high quality as the amino acid present is well-balanced. It has become very popular as a health food due to its high mineral and antioxidant content. Its benefits may include reduced blood sugar, improved heart health, and is gluten-free and therefore suitable for people with gluten intolerance.

Whole Wheat

Whole wheat is one of the most versatile of all grains, with 30,000 known varieties. It is the most common cereal grain and is staple in Indian diets. It is more affordable and is available all year round and can be consumed in the form of chapatis etc. The unrefined wheat contains complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber and the protein content present in 100g of wheat is 11.8g, which is moderate as compared to others. It helps in controlling obesity, increases energy, prevents type 2 diabetes and prevents gallstone.

Sorghum (Jowar)

In India jowar is famous as gluten-free alternative to wheat and can be eaten in various forms such as chapati, dosa, bhakri, cheela etc. This ancient Indian grain is a member of the millet family and one of the healthiest choices for carbohydrate intake. These are packed with vitamins and minerals, which include B-complex vitamins, copper, calcium, zinc, potassium and phosphorus. The protein content present in 100g of jowar is 10.4g and can be more if consumed in the sprouted form. In case you are diabetic or have an altered lipid profile, including jowar as a part of the daily diet would help in reducing the sugar levels.

Ragi (Nachni)

Ragi, also known as nachni, stands apart from other millets due to its high calcium content. It is one of the super-foods, which is regularly used in the kitchens of South India and is consumed in the form of various food items such as dosa, kanji etc. Not just for adults but for babies too, ragi is an excellent food ingredient. The protein content present in 100g of ragi is 7.3g which is comparatively lower than others but, the high calcium content combined with proteins makes it beneficial for the overall health. Besides this, regular intake of ragi battles anemia, aids weight loss, fights depression and maintains blood pressure within normal range.

The bottom line is, including these ancient Indian grains in your regular diet will have a long-term benefit. No need to avoid the refined grains for the rest of your life – just use them infrequently, once in a fortnight or in a month, cooked healthily and in small quantities, along with other nutritious foods. Try this path and you will see immediate results with ensured long-term benefits.
